Thanks for the interest. We do get funny looks form the code people (and the banks) but we work with an engineer and this all qualifies as timberframe so they usually rubber stamp it in the end. We look at all their questions as a chance to educate them about the possibilities. Its well worth the process in the end!

Loving the organic forms and the back to basics of whole logs and straw roof insulation systems. In the past this is the way buildings where made. Now unless it has been machined, comes out of a wrapper or a bucket the building department starts to look at you crosseyed. What is your experience with code officials and owners? Are the poles rated? Is an engineer required? How do you find voids in logs? Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Hey Roald, Congrats on the NYT story. I've forwarded it to all the permaculture lists that I'm on as well as over facebook & twitter. Very good to see this info go public. I really want to visit your greenhouse on a cold blustery day to see what you have going. Camille & I are closing on 40 acres to start a vineyard / winery /greenhouse fantasy on Hway 82...

I think you are right! Perfect description. I tend to call all "pleurotus" mushrooms oysters of one sort or another, although I suppose you'd say that's irresponsible. The Panus is indeed an ally. My books tell me the Panus Strigosus is edible and rare-- but tough. And indeed, this was tough, but I enjoyed it. We tried only a tiny amount the first night, and more the second. No problems.

It was such a beautiful sight! We do have your average oyster growing all over right now, and enjoy that weekly. Where is your mushroom club? I wish we had one near here.

The mushroom on the left in the deep scar in the tree is NOT an oyster I hope that although you said you ate it you did not consume that much as it can give you an upset stomach.

Our mushroom club was looking at your photo and several of concur that it is possible that is it a Panus strigosus which is actually fairly rare.
