We have several exciting workshops planned for this summer and fall:

Choose between two weekend workshops or attend both of the following:

July 30th – August 1st AND August 6th – August 8th at the Christine Center

Straw Bale Construction and Insulation

Learn firsthand how straw bale buildings go together on the Kara Woods Residence, a one-of-a-kind building incorporating: whole tree timber-framing, straw bale infill, a living roof and much more.  This class on straw bale construction with experienced natural builder Mark Morgan will take you from toe ups to plaster. Learn how to prep the bales, what they sit on and how they connect to each other, the windows, doors, ceiling and roof. Then finish the walls with plaster and stucco. There will be two workshops on back-to-back weekends with an opportunity to stay between for more time and experience.  Bring gloves, work boots, safety glasses, ear protection work clothes and come ready to work!

September 11th at Driftless Farm

Healthy Humanure Composting: Techniques and Experiential Stories

Driftless Farm, Stoddard, WI, is an off-the-grid forest and veggie farm with passive-solar strawbale buildings and no septic system.  The farm currently composts its humanure in 3 separate systems– a home-made worm and methane digesting flush toilet, an outhouse, and a commercial model of composting toilet.  Learn from experiential tales, on-site demos, and suggestions from the larger movement of humanure composters.  Participants will leave with an understanding of the do’s and don’ts of this safe relationship to our most intimate earthly by-product!
